Romantasy character creation, just as with any character creation, is at the heart of any story. These characters drive the plot as well as forge deep emotional connections with readers. Whether you’re an aspiring romantasy author or looking to self-publish, understanding how to craft compelling characters is essential.
The further I got in the writing process for my first romantasy novel, The Awakening of a Princess, in my planned pentalogy, The Ashes of Eyrondale, I discovered that character creation was both the most challenging and rewarding part of my path. The process of bringing characters to life, imbuing them with depth, and making them resonate with readers required thoughtful exploration and a structured approach. But, then again, there were, and still are, days when the characters themselves take control and lead me down their own path.
Characters embody the dreams, struggles, and aspirations of the readers. In a romantasy novel, these characters are set against a backdrop of magical and mythical elements. Crafting characters with depth and authenticity transforms your narrative into an immersive experience, that will see your readers falling in love with them and rooting for them to succeed.
key elements of a compelling romantasy character
1. depth and complexity
Romantasy characters should be multifaceted, with a rich tapestry of emotions, desires, and internal conflicts. These layers reflect genuine human experiences, making the characters relatable even in fantastical settings. When I created the characters for The Awakening of a Princess, I ensured each one had a unique backstory and emotional journey, which helped them come alive on the page. Now, while I may have already had a few of my characters developed in my mind years before I typed my first word, I can’t deny that facing them head-on and fleshing out their personalities and motives made them more real—more tangible.
2. authenticity
Despite the magical elements of romantasy, characters need to exude authenticity. Genuine motivations and actions, rooted in personal histories and emotional truths, breathe life into your characters. This authenticity helps readers connect with their struggles and triumphs. My protagonist’s journey in The Awakening of a Princess is grounded in real emotions and challenges, making her relatable despite the fantastical world she inhabits. It’s actually the complexity of human emotions that sees Katherine’s challenges and triumphs propel the series forward.
3. relationship dynamics
Romantic relationships are crucial in romantasy, serving as catalysts for both character development and plot progression. These relationships shape the characters, creating compelling arcs that resonate emotionally with readers. In my novel, the evolving dynamics between characters not only drive the plot but also lead to significant character growth.
the importance of character depth and believability
emotional resonance
Richly developed characters evoke empathy from readers. When readers can relate to their struggles, cheer for their victories, and understand their motives, they become deeply invested in the story. This focus on emotional depth was crucial in my writing process for The Awakening of a Princess. While books two and three delve deeper into the magic and mystery of the fantasy world I've created, it's the emotional vulnerability showcased in the first book that keeps readers rooting for their favourite characters late into the night and that will see them enjoy the rest of the series.
narrative impact
Well-crafted characters drive the plot naturally through their decisions and growth arcs, influencing events in meaningful ways that ensure the story unfolds organically and credibly. In narratives across romantasy literature, these characters' choices and development are integral, creating compelling and believable storylines that captivate readers from start to finish.
longevity
Memorable romantasy characters leave a lasting impression, transcending the confines of their stories to spark discussions and inspire fan creations long after the final page is turned. These characters often become benchmarks for future works in the genre. Consider why some of your favourite characters linger in your thoughts—they resonate deeply with their complexity, relatability, and the impact they have on the narrative.
consider using a romantasy character creation worksheet
Creating characters with depth and resonance requires thoughtful exploration and planning. A structured character creation worksheet serves as a valuable tool in this process:
Prompts and Questions: These help delve into your character's backstory, motivations, and personality traits, uncovering layers that might not surface otherwise.
Character Arcs: Mapping out character arcs ensures cohesive and impactful development throughout your story.
Organisation of Ideas: Structuring insights into a cohesive format helps discover new facets of characters and sparks fresh story possibilities.

Throughout my journey writing The Ashes of Eyrondale, I’ve developed a structured worksheet that has proven invaluable in organizing my thoughts, exploring deeper layers of my characters, and ensuring their development remains cohesive and impactful.
Crafting well-developed characters in romantasy requires both artistry and method—a delicate balance of imagination, empathy, and structured planning. By using a character creation worksheet, you can breathe life into characters that resonate with magic, romance, and adventure, enriching your storytelling journey and captivating readers along the way.
